From 2020-2022, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan and Linux Foundations, Open@RIT worked with 25 faculty members on Open projects ranging from computational astrophysics and vineyard genetics to early childhood literacy for Deaf children worldwide, Open Access Journal screen reader accessibility, and a database on Victorian autobiography. The common theme around all of these projects was preparing for, or extending existing, Open Communities of contributors and users. This work also informed an early stage effort to work with the CHAOSS community Value Group and CHAOSS’ Grimoire Labs platform, to develop an analytics package called Mystic to better surface the wide range of contributions and effort that goes into making a successful Open Academic Project. In this session, the presenters will discuss the work that was accomplished, the playbook created around it, and the next steps for the support of faculty and the Mystic technology.
